You’ve seen her on enormous stages and screens …

but you’ve never heard this part of her story.

This week, our daughter, Eliotte Nicole, walked through a curtain onto a beautiful performance stage and used her entertainment journey to inspire a room full of high school students, parents, and educators. I was privileged to sit next to her as she offered realistic, transparent counsel on what it takes to audition, book, and keep jobs at every level of an entertainment career. Now, her experience at the topmost level as a background vocalist for Taylor Swift makes her insight undeniably valuable as art programs are being stretched for lack of funding.

Hosted by my dear friend, Dr. Warren Mize, and my voice studio, Eliotte Nicole opened her career playbook for all to see at Patterson Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of East Central High School. She wasn’t looking for their applause, though they graciously gave it, because her heart was focused on the real truths of what it means to be a paid artist today.

To be clear, kids today haven’t lost interest in the arts. We have lost interest in making that career path a worthwhile and tangible career choice. Honestly, I have also doubted at times that a decent wage could be earned as a trained vocal, dance or theater artist. However, students see the funding cuts and closed doors, and they crave mentors and experienced artists to show them the way. Out of that recognized need, this event opened one door in San Antonio. It all started because two friends and a daughter believed it was necessary, and my daughter showed up with her full intention to educate and inspire.

As we head into Mother’s Day, I am grateful I was in the room to hear her share so many industry nuggets, but these words particularly touched me:

            Work hard.

            Be kind.

That is what is required of you in this industry.

No one wants to work with an unkind person.

To the hardworking young artists and supportive “villages” who believe in their dreams through every rejection and setback, I see you, and I am applauding your hard work. The valleys will come. Count on that. But the perseverance you develop in the lowest points will make you stronger and forge a pathway for you. Do not give up!

Chris and I are extremely proud of each of our five children for their dreams and ability to focus and fight through the losses and shadows that have appeared on their journeys. Hearing one of them use every bit of her journey to enlighten the next generation in that room this week was simply priceless.

I stand in awe of God’s goodness.
